2024 Spring schedule

Dear PACK families (and prospective families)-
Spring 2024 session starts MONDAY, Jan 8 and culminates May 4-5 (production weekend). Creative Movement runs 12 weeks through Saturday, April 6. We will not have class the week of Spring Break, March 25-30. PACK will produce TBA with grades k-8th, and TBA with Performance Company (May 7-8)

Advanced Contemporary (7th grade-up)

This level is available for Contemporary dancers who are ready for fresh challenges.

Wednesday 7:30-8:30PM

Advanced Modern Ballet (7th grade-up)

Combining Cecchetti Method discipline, Graham floorwork and technique, and performance fundamentals, PACK’s modern ballet program builds dancer confidence while preparing an engaging number for the current production. Ballet students are eligible to move up through the levels as they grow as dancers and performers.

Tuesday 7:30-8:30PM

Advanced Production Design (7th grade-up)

Advanced production design is for older student designers who will create the overall look and design elements for the Performance Company productions.

Tuesday 4:30-5:30PM

Beginner / Intermediate Contemporary (2nd-6th grade)

The class is an exploration of the themes and fundamentals of dance-theatre culture, as well as new, fresh choreography that is showcased in PACK’s current production. Dancers will learn both the classic movement vocabulary and the current trends, for dance piece that blends old and new. Advanced levels are available for Contemporary dancers who are ready for fresh challenges.

Thursday 5:30-6:30PM

Beginner Jazz (k-2nd grade)

Beginner Jazz focuses on introducing Broadway-style jazz technique, musicality, rhythm, and stretching. Students focus on character-development, choreography, facial expression, body language, and ensemble-based teamwork. 

Wednesday 4:30-5:30PM

Beginner Modern Ballet (k-2nd grade)

The ballet program focuses on technique and strength training, as well as characterization while dancing. This program is highly recommended for all Musical Theatre students. Combining Cecchetti Method discipline, Graham floorwork and technique, and performance fundamentals, PACK’s modern ballet program builds dancer confidence while preparing an engaging number for the current production. Ballet students are eligible to move up through the levels as they grow as dancers and performers.

Thursday 4:30-5:30PM

Costume Design (5th grade-up)

Costume design is an introduction to the many skills required to costume a theatrical production. Students will learn to source and repurpose clothing as well as create original costume pieces to suit the current productions. Basic design, sewing skills, and the use of a sewing machine will be taught.

Creative Movement (ages 3-5)

Our youngest students have a blast in this introduction to storytelling through creative movement, ballet technique, singing and dramatic play. A great precursor to production classes, this program allows our smallest PACK-ers to follow directions, work together with peers, and gain confidence as performers. Each session culminates in a low-key studio performance for friends and family.

Our youngest students have a blast in this introduction to storytelling through creative movement, ballet technique, singing and dramatic play. Saturday 12-12:45PM

Design Basics (2nd-4th grade)

For students 2nd-4th grade interested in production design and costume design. A pre-production technique class to introduce design fundamentals. This class will culminate with an end-of-session art showing.

Wednesdays 5:30-6:30pm

Improv / Comedy (2nd grade-up)

Participants sharpen their improvisation skills and ability to perform without a script. Theater games teach characterization, collaboration, and artistic risk-taking with humor and fun. This class is a great introduction to the craft for eager newbies, as well as a creative exploration for experienced performers.

Friday 5:30-6:30PM

Intermediate Jazz (3rd grade-up)

Intermediate Jazz focuses on introducing concepts and techniques from classic jazz choreographers such as Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins, as well as contemporary jazz choreography and modern musicality. Students build ensemble-based choreography alongside faculty.

Jr Company (k-2nd grade)

Junior Company members benefit from a diverse program that emphasizes Broadway-style choreography, group scene work, and singing in character. The performers prepare two musical numbers and a scene for the current show, while learning technique through games and exercises.

Tuesday 4:30-5:30PM, Fridays 4:30-5:30PM

PACK Lab (10th-12th grade)

PACK LAB is a pre-professional training simulation in which students create and execute their own production under the mentorship of theatre industry professionals. For grades 10-12, PACK LAB prepares young artists for creative careers by equipping them with a full production budget, access to facilities, and professional guidance to help them shape their own project. PACK LAB is an advanced continuation of the skill-building program that begins with early childhood performance education at PACK.

This resume-building program will kick-start career experience, round out a competitive college application, and provide a letter of recommendation for future professional projects or academic applications. PACK LAB students will be encouraged to produce work with a high degree of professionalism, while experimenting and risk-taking in their artistic process. This program is recommended for pre-professional performers, as well as those with special interest in producing, directing, choreographing, designing and/or stage-managing.

Sunday 1pm-3pm (12 weeks)

Performance Company (7th grade-up)

PACK’s physical-theatre advanced ensemble will devise a performance project with faculty. This is an audition-based class. For more information on auditioning for PACK Performance Company, please email us at pennsportpack@gmail.com.

Tuesday 5:30-7:30PM

Pre-college dance (10th-12th grade)

For high school students (10th-12th grade) interested in strengthening their dance and choreography skills before auditioning for academic or professional programs. This class will include stretching, modern, contemporary, and jazz technique, as well as performance opportunities. All levels welcome!

Friday 4:30-5:30PM

Production Design (5th grade-up)

Production design is responsible for the overall look and design elements of the PACK productions. Student designers learn to fabricate, repurpose, or source props and set pieces for use in the current show and will learn basic design principles, varied construction and painting techniques, and participate in show-specific projects such as puppet construction. This class requires the use of sharp tools which students are taught to use and handle properly.

Monday 4:30-5:30PM

Sr Company (3rd-4th grade)

Senior Company members dive deeper into learning complex choreography, creating compelling characters, and singing, both solo and as part of a group. The performers prepare at least three musical numbers and challenging scenes for the current production as they practice vocal technique, dance warm-ups, and taking direction.
